We are very happy to announce the result of the 2023 photography competition. This year 4 chapater members participated by sending their photos
The photos were examined by 4 different evaluators, anonymously and with secret voting. The criteria evaluated were:
25 points – Creativity.
25 points – Difficulty.
25 points – Technical parameters.
25 points – Photo description.
Awards and overall score (sum of all evaluators):
1st – Tiago Junior de Bortoli – 344 points – (prize R$ 250.00)
2nd – Filipe Zanini Broetto – 325 points – (prize R$ 150)
3rd – Tainara Lima – 309 points (prize R$ 125)
4th – Jonas Bernardi – 308 points – no prizes
The photos are in order according to classification
On october 19th the experimental class for architecture and civil engineering was held, as usual, every six months. In particular, this semester, we had two very large classes, totaling 60 students present. Our group thanks everyone who helps the class happen and also all the students.
Between 10/07 and 10/12, chapter member Tiago Junior de Bortoli attended in student leadership promoted by OPTICA. This annual event seeks to form new leadership for student chapters in order to promote greater integration and engagement of chapters. According to Tiago, “Participation in the event is essential to bring new knowledge and new experiences to the chapter”.
Generative Artificial Intelligence is the technology behind ChatGPT. Among the various possibilities for industrial application of this technology, there is computer vision. This is the central theme of a cooperation project between UFSC and the Technical University of Aachen, Germany, supported by CAPES/DFG, which explores its use to measure from images. We would like to invite you to attend a lecture on this very current subject to be given in English by the Chief Engineer of WZL-Acchen on October 9th at 2 pm in the Mechanical Engineering Auditorium. Below is the electronic poster with more information about the lecture and the speaker.
On August 3, 2023, our chapter held the second meeting of the year 2023 to align some goals and plans for the year. The meeting took place in the classroom of the laboratory and on the occasion ideas such as the competition for experiments, the photo competition and introducing the chapter to new members were agendas of the meeting.
As announced at the last meeting, we are promoting a photography challenge.
The idea is to promote learning and interaction among members by capturing photos. The proposed challenge is that each member must capture (with a smartphone) a photo of some optical effect (diffraction, refraction, reflection, among others) with the best characteristics they can. See the photos from the last edition as an example
For this competition not to be so dependent on the quality of the smartphone’s camera, we are going to propose some rules for capturing the photo:
1° The photo must be taken with a maximum resolution of 12 Mpx.
2° Photos must be captured in JPG or PNG format. Many cell phones already come with the PRO mode where it is possible to change the photography parameters. If you don’t have native pro mode, we recommend one of the following apps: ProCam X Lite or Manual Camera Lite – Professional Camera DSLR.
3° Explore all the options to take a good photo. Mess with aperture, exposure time, ISO, among other things. A good combination of these parameters will definitely lead to good photos. We know it’s not easy to find a perfect match for photography parameters. But to help with this task, we strongly recommend that you test your skills in advance on the website below:

The evaluation criteria will be:
25 points – Creativity.
25 points – Difficulty.
25 points – technical parameters.
25 points – Photo-description.
The photos must be sent to the e-mail of the spie. Submit your photo and photo description together. Also send the parameters used to take the picture (ISO, focal length, shutter and others).
Do not send via whatsapp or any other app that compresses the photos. The sending of photos is valid until the 31/08.
Prize : the prize will be for the first three places in the challenge and will be:
1st – BRL 250.00
2nd – BRL 150.00
3rd – BRL 100.00
Challenge launched! We count on everyone’s participation and loyalty.
The World of Photonics Congress, which includes SPIE Optical Metrology, has held in person in 2023. This event highlights the the latest advances in optical measurement systems. It is the meeting for emerging photonics fields within measurement systems, modeling, imaging, sensing, and inspection.
Our member of the SPIE/OPTICA group Tainara Lima received a travel grant to participate in this event and present her paper at the conference
On May 11th the experimental class for architecture and civil engineering was held, as usual, every six months. In particular, this semester, we had two very large classes, totaling 80 students present.
Our group thanks everyone who helps the class happen and also all the students.
On March 20, the first social event of 2023 of our student chapter was held. A barbecue was held on the occasion. The event featured a lot of interaction between the group members.
